This study examines the extent of substitution between formal and informal support and factors influencing behaviors seeking the external support among persons with serious mental illness(SMI). Andersen and Newman model and Theory of Planned Behaviors were considered with regard to seeking the external help. 399 persons with SMI who utilized community-based services were surveyed and analyzed, employing 3 Stages Least Squares analysis. Major findings showed that the increased amount of formal support enhanced the amount of informal support. Based on Andersen and Newman, formal support was predicted by diagnosis and informal support by age and marriage status. Based on Theory of Planned Behavior, formal support was predicted by the positive attitude to mental health services and informal support by the positive attitude to self and self-stigma. Implications were addressed theoretically and practically.
